Commonly known as the adventure capital of New Zealand Queenstown has all the activities you might want to take part in - jet boating, mountain biking, bungy jumping... plus it's also the gateway to the spectacular Milford Sound and the Fiordland walks like the Routeburn and Milford Track. Queenstown night life is capricious in intensity with a friendly local crowd and a lot of backpacker style pubs. There are numerous places to stay and the lake setting and snow capped mountains around make it a lovely vista. A good place to base for awhile.
