MT
HAGEN

The Highlands are the most densely
populated region of PNG and has the highest agriculture
production and most extensive road system in the country.
Mt Hagen is one of the towns up here. The area was not
actually thought to be inhabited until the 1930s when
gold miners discovered people living Stone-Age style
and unaware of the outside world. So culture can be
quite traditional still. Around Mt Hagen the land is
full of valleys, rivers and mountains. People still
make a lot of traditional handicrafts and the local
markets and the annual shows are a good place to see
this, traditional dancing and singing (sing-sings) and
other cultural events.
