DRESS
For the most part, sensible clothing that
is not too skimpy or tight will suffice. Keep
yourself tidy and your clothes clean and ensure
sufficient body cover, particularly when visiting
churches and other religious establishments.
Too casual a dress may be refused entry to
some clubs and restaurants in Europe, but
in other parts of the world you may feel overdressed.
In some countries even more modest dress will
apply, particularly for women. Always take
note of what local people wear and fit in
accordingly.
CUSTOMS
Do not assume everyone speaks English even
though it is an international language. Try
to learn a few phrases in the local language
including "please", "thank
you", "excuse me", "do
you speak English?"
The phrase "When in Rome" should
be your general guide. Try to blend in where
you can. If queue jumping, spitting in the
streets, or even open urinating is the norm
then go with the flow. Don't lecture people
about behaviour that is rude by your standards
but acceptable in their country. If you don't
like it, don't join in. Search our country
guides for more specific information.
