Bus
travel throughout the world is generally
considered second place to going by train
due to the hours involved and discomfort
of overnight travel. However bus tickets
are usually less expensive (although make
sure you always compare the costs with a
railway ticket) and can get you off the
regular tourist trail to little known towns
and villages.
The only setback can be lack of services
and connecting transport. It’s always
worth doing a bit of homework at the local
tourist information office when you arrive.
In Europe Eurolines
is the largest network of international
buses and they operate through major towns
in Europe. People under 26 years are around
10% less than the adult full fare and there
are passes and routes available at cheaper
prices. Bus tours are also an option like
Busabout (busabout.info@virgin.net)
and Eurobus who provide a hop on and off
service. They will normally book accommodation
ahead of time although this can be outlying
campsites to the town. In the South Pacific
KiwiAdventure
and OzAdventure
provide a similar service in New Zealand
and Australia.
In Asian and African countries bus travel
can be crowded, cramped, slow and uncomfortable
but it is an experience of life and well worth
a few discomforts. And you may be lucky enough
to share your seat with chickens, monks or
friendly locals. There are a few things to
watch for. Some companies may sell five people
the same seat number or possibly there may
only be standing room or even sitting space
on the roof. Buses vary from place to place
but usually it is possible to choose between
ordinary, express, semi-luxe, deluxe, deluxe
air-con and even deluxe sleeper. Make sure
you know what you are paying for. Most travellers
are advised to take private or tourist buses
as they are faster and more comfortable. Government
buses can be dangerously ill maintained and
hopelessly crowded. You may also have to endure
ear piercing local pop music played over tinny
speakers. However generally you do not need
to book ahead. Just turn up and push your
way on.
