SPECIALITIES
Dublin is the official home of Guiness. Bacon and cabbage, coddle, Irish stew, smoked salmon on soda bread, boxty, mussels and stout are some of the traditional dishes associated with Dublin.

However you will increasingly find a cosmpolitan palate with anything from burgers to bhajis, pizzas to pakoras, gumbo to guacamole. Italian. French, American, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Lebanese, Japanese, Russian and even Translyvanian cuisines.

Bewley's Oriental Cafés

Temple Bar is the most concentrated restaurant area in Dublin.

Beshoff's
Ivan Beshoff's fish and chip shop is an institution in Dublin. It is famous for its fresh fish and chips which you can eat in its old-fashioned style restaurants. 7 Upper O'Connell Street, Dublin. 14 Westmoreland Street, Dublin

Bella Cuba
An authentic Cuban restaurant with good food and reasonable prices. 11 Ballsbridge Tce, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

Abbey Tavern - the Abbot Restaurant
Howth is one of the oldest fishing villages in these islands and renowned for seafood. Howth, County Dublin

Bad Ass Cafe
Good pizzas in a student atmosphere. Very popular. Sinead O'Connor once worked here as a waitress! 9-11 Crown Alley.


Nico's
Conservative Italian food with Irish influences. Very popular with piano. 53 Dame Street on the corner of Temple Lane. Open for dinner Mon-Sat. Lunch on weekdays.

O'Connell Street is the fast-food centre of Dublin. You will find McDonalds, Burger King and pizza joints.

Leo Burdock's
Classic fish and chip shop popular with locals. Take-away food only. Werburgh Street

Well Fed Cafe
Busy, big and with large portions of food. Popular with backpackers staying nearby. Open noon to 8pm Mon-Sat. 6 Crow Street.

Temple Bar is the pub crawling neighbourhood of Dublin.

The Brazen Head
The oldest pub in town and popular with tourists while remaining traditionally Irish. Claims to be founded in 1198. James Joyce mentions it in Ulysses. 20 Lower Bridge Street, Dublin 8. Bus 21, 21A.

Café en Seine
A popular spot and a mix of an Irish pub and French café. Visited by tourists and a wealthier set. Good value meals available. 40 Dawson Street, Dublin 2.

Club USI
Cheap pints and student orientation with lots of free events. Operated by the Union of Students in Ireland. Aston Place, Dublin 2.

The Dockers
This place is sometimes frequented by U2 who drop in for a pint when recording nearby at Windmill Studios. 5 Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Dublin 2. DART: Tara Street.

Doheny & Nesbitt
An atmopsheric place full of lawyers and journos from the Irish Times. 5 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2. Bus 10, 11, 11A.

Slattery's
Lots of live music including traditional Irish ballads. 129 Capel Street, Dublin 1.

The Stag's Head
A popular place and the dark wood, smoke and stuffed animals give it atmosphere. It has featured on a postage stamp series on Irish pubs. 1 Dame Court, Dublin 2.

Rock Music - try Whelan's, the Purty Kitchen, Baggott Inn, Fibber McGee's, the Mean Fiddler and Larry O'Rourke's.

Traditional Music - Auld Dubliner, Boss Croker's, Brazen Head, Slattery's, Whelan's, The meand Fiddler, Mother Redcaps, O'Donoghue's, Purty Kitchen, Boss Croker's.
