RABAUL

In
1994 much of Rabaul was destroyed by a volcanic eruption
and is still buried between ash and mud. However this
still makes it an interesting place to visit. The volcanoes
can be climbed that surround it and the diving is sensational
- sunken ships, war relics, reefs and fish. There are
a lot of other relics from WWII in the area. The Japanese
dugs kilometres of tunnels and local kids will show
you these and the wreckage of their planes. You can
reach Rabaul by boat or plane from Tokua airport.
