This Gothic cathedral was begun in 1176 after the previous burnt down. The west façade was completed in 1284 but the spire was only finally added in 1439. Statues inside the cathedral are generally copies with the originals in the Musee de l’Oeuvre NotreDame. You can climb part the way up the spire. Open daily 7-7pm (except during masses).

AROUND STRASBOURG

Nancy
Nancy is in Lorraine, the region bordering Alsace to the north-west. Sights to see include a gilded central square called Place Stanislas, chocolate shops, a fine museum with works of the Art Nouveau movement and an air of elegance. Trains leave direct to Strasbourg and Paris’ Gare de l’Est.

Colmar
Colmar is famous for its typically Alsatian architecture, a fine museum and neighbourhoods of old half-timbered buildings. The train ride from Strasbourg takes only 30 minutes.
